It’s a pretty classic tale. Three mates, three wine science degrees, one vintage. Many beers. It’s about Kasper Hermann, Sam Middleton and Will Byron, young gun winemakers who decided one day to pool their resources, buy a tonne of fruit, and start their own label.

The label’s grown a lot since then. The name sounds like “on and on” but it’s actually the last few letters of each of their surnames. They have a home vineyard in Red Hill – five acres overlooking Port Phillip Bay – but they also make wine from grapes grown in Leongatha, Gippsland.

Both the Pinots they make are both single-site (one from Mornington Peninsula and the other from Gippsland), and they also make Chardonnay and a tiny amount of Pinot Gris and Rosé.

Despite their relative youth, all the boys have serious winemaking experience. As well as making wine under the Onannon label, both Middleton and Hermann also currently make wine at Mount Mary, and Byron at Stonier.
